Danbury, Connecticut
Welcome to Hat City, conveniently located with access
to major highways and shopping centers.
First settled in 1685, Danbury was incorporated in 1702.
Originally known as Swampfield, its name was changed to
Danbury in 1687. Steeped in history, Danbury was
an important military depot during the American
Revolution, during which the city was burned and looted
by the British army. Known as Hat City or
The Hat Capital of the World, Danbury's history
of making hats dates back perhaps to the 1780's.
By 1800, more hats were being made in Danbury than any
other US city. Today, the hatting industry is no
longer in Danbury. The Danbury Fair began in 1821,
and was an annual event from 1869-1981. Of course,
the Danbury Fair Mall, which opened in 1986, sits on the
site of the former Danbury Fairgrounds.
Today, Danbury is a diverse city of approximately 78,000
residents. Danbury has added numerous businesses
and industries since the decline of hatting in the area,
and offers residents a varied selection of new
construction and resale homes, multi-family properties,
condominiums and townhomes, historic homes and a
selection of waterfront cottages and estates. Home
prices range from condos below $100,000 to sprawling million
dollar properties.
